U.S. commissioners' dockets and record books, 1902-1912.

Entries list defendants, witnesses, fees. complaints, and actions. Photographs of the defendant are pasted into some docket entries. Loose documents relating to a case are sometimes within the docket pages. Most actions involve Chinese exclusion matters. The dockets were created in Douglas (U.S. commisioners Pirtle and Sames) and Nogales (U.S. commissioners Williams and Bird). Commissioner Williams has a separate record, which details an extradition case. Commissioner Bird's proceedngs extend into the District Court of Arizona and include the minutes for the Mexican Mines Consolidated Company's activities on July 14, 1906 (Bird was Secretary of the mining company as well as a U.S. commissioner).

Historical note:: U.S. Army paymaster Major Joseph W. Wham and his military escort were robbed of more than $28,000 in gold and silver coins on May 11, 1889 along the road between Fort Grant and Fort Thomas about fifteen miles west of Pima, Arizona. The trial, held in Tucson, for seven suspects lasted from November 11, 1889 to December 14, 1889 when all were acquitted. The money was never recovered.
